The Strategy on Reducing Regulatory and Administrative Burden Relating to the Use of Health IT and EHRs draft has been released for public comment through January 28, 2019. The draft, released by HHS (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services), addresses EHR issues such as time physicians spend entering data, copy/paste, and templates that lead to extensive and repetitive notes. Physicians spend over half of their time documenting in the EHR and are experiencing burnout while practices are battling data overload. The draft focuses on three goals: 1) Reduce the effort and time required to record health information in EHRs for clinicians; 2) Reduce the effort and time required to meet regulatory reporting requirements for clinicians, hospitals, and health care organizations; 3) Improve functionality and intuitiveness of EHRs. The ONC (Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology) worked with CMS (Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services) to create the draft and is seeking stakeholder feedback.
